Meet Beulah

Hello! I’m Beulah, a clinical psychologist with a warm & encouraging Approach

Beulah Marks clinical psychologist in Cape Town

My approach to therapy is empathetic and thoughtful. I’ll also bring a bit of gentle probing to our therapeutic conversations. In our conversations, we’ll work together to nurture deep insight into the origins of the feelings, thinking patterns and behaviours that are causing discomfort in your everyday life.

Once we have established your goals, I offer a compassionate balance between steering and supporting you. The therapeutic relationship we develop over time is often a powerful force in the healing and growth process.

Sessions with me often help clients to strengthen their self-awareness, which helps them to notice and overcome destructive thoughts and behaviours. My approach to mental health is intersectional and clients also build insight into the impact of systems on their individual well-being. Together with practical strategies for change learned in therapy, this empowers clients to nurture more satisfying relationships, grow more meaningful careers and enjoy life with improved mental health.

My qualifications

MA Clinical Psychology (University of Cape Town)
BA (Honours) in Psychology (University of South Africa)
Postgraduate Diploma in Education (University of Cape Town)
BA in English Literature and Psychology (University of Cape Town)

My professional experience

Before I worked in private practice, I was a clinical psychologist at the University of Cape Town where my job included providing therapy and advocating for accommodations for student and staff mental health and disability needs. I have also practised clinically in both private and public, South African and international-run, clinics and hospitals across Cape Town. These positions, together with lived experience, have led to my special interests in neurodiversity and decoloniality.

My practice is also informed by lived experience in varied communities during and after apartheid; the 20+ years of working experience I gathered as school teacher and guidance counsellor; at the nexus of counselling-NPO-research work; and perhaps unexpectedly, within client services in the financial services industry.

My continuous professional education includes trauma-focused therapy, neurodiversity (including ADHD and autism), and applying eco-systemic and decolonial thinking in practice. I have also completed additional training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, BrainWorking Recursive Therapy, parenting support and coaching, amongst others.

I am registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and am a member of the Psychological Society of South Africa (PSYSSA), including its Decolonial, and Climate and Environmental Psychology Divisions. I have volunteered my clinical and leadership skills with Lifeline and other community-based NPOs.

How I can support You

There are two ways in which I offer mental health support. Therapy sessions are available for individuals, families and groups on a regular basis; for couples counselling, we can offer a referral. My practice also runs a calendar of workshops and programmes to support general mental well-being.

Individual, Family & Group Therapy

Engage in consistent sessions of psychotherapy for individuals and family members, or join a group of like-minded people for regular therapy.

Workshops & Guided Programmes

Learn practical skills to build good mental health with guided programmes and standalone workshops, for people in and out of therapy.
